[ there's a long pause, and jade listens. she thinks about it in terms of a disney movie, above all else, because it sounds like one. a kingdom torn asunder, a king in pain. a mother figure lost. what was it with disney and moms? jade should google it. and then she remembers, hah, there is no google in prison. percival's story lulls her into such a relaxed state, she momentarily forgets she hasn't even a modicum of freedom. perhaps she'll sleep, and rest well tonight, her head full of fairytales that seem too personal to not be true and reunions that come too late but just soon enough at the same time. maybe some day jade will tell percival about the knight who didn't tell the princess in the tower about all the terrible things that would happen to her when he met her, or about the one who believed in her even when he saw her crying alone in the saw.

today, she talks to him about three princes who forgot what it was like to need love. ]

I know.

[ her voice is so thick with sincerity, it might as well ooze warmth. if she could manage it, she'd try to sound reassuring. she knows. she trusts them. she can survive a bit longer. ]

Which one was you?

[ but she has a hunch about this story that bothers her, and she wants to know the truth. there's always an inspiration behind it, and even if percival isn't one of those princes, maybe he knew people who had been. ]

[ that question prompts a silence. he thinks it over, long and hard, as to what he should say.

he wants to opt for the smug, withdrawn answer: the one that leaves his heart on a lock. but it's stupid, so utterly stupid to be concerned with something like that when this girl, who has done nothing to warrant this, is suffering.

so he swallows. ]
