[ not that the cold bothers jade much.

she'll lead madoka in, and then, when the ghost is easily spotted: ] Oh, is this your friend?

Um. I'm not sure if friend is the right word...

[the ghost lifts a hand, pointing a creepy, bony finger at the both of them. it's clearly getting a kick out of terrifying the tiny pink living human. clearly!!]

[Madoka sort of looks like she might also become a ghost if she turned around to look at it.]

[ ...........

well. ]

Don't pick on her! Stay here and I will make sure that your scaring days are over, mister! Go on, get!

[ apparently this is old yeller now. but jade's nudging madoka behind her with the intent of slamming the door in the ghost's face. it's a much more intense show than it needs to be, probably, but jade's intense to begin with. ] Has this specter been scaring you all this time, Madoka?

[see, this is why Jade is so much cooler than everyone else. but the ghost just continues pointing, and will probably continue to do so even after Jade slams the door, at least until it gets bored of waiting around.]

[Madoka is relieved, but also a bit deflated.]

I know I shouldn't let it scare me! I just — [look, if she were to ever spawn a Nightmare, the imagery would probably include ghosts riding roller coasters.]

It's not really letting you, though?

[ for good measure, jade moves the nearest heavy thing in front of the door. the boys will have to knock, that's just how it is. ] I mean... you are not necessarily letting it scare you... It is more like you can't control that.

I ... you're right; I guess I can't control what the ghosts decide to do. [she's punctuated by a loud and spooky sort of ghost noise from outside the door, and she instinctively darts behind Jade again. whoever this dead guy is, he's really hamming it up.]

[ punctuated with a knock on the door. maybe it's getting a rise out of her because she's responding? hmm... she'll have to ignore it from this point on. ]

Well, Madoka, I do not think you should force yourself to feel something, but would it help if I talked about how you might be influenced to feel scared around that jerk?

— You'd be willing to do that? [she'd flinched a little at the knocking, but there's a large measure of relief in her question, too.]

Yeah!!! I don't get to talk about science a lot so I would love to do that for you. Let's see here...

[ where to begin... jade ushers madoka to a chair, and pats it, insisting she sit down. ] It could be the wind!

The wind? [she asks as she has a seat, and halfway wishing she had brought one of her notebooks along with her.]

[but, notes or no notes, Madoka will listen eagerly to whatever lesson she's about to get. teach her everything there is to know about ghosts, Harley-sensei.]

Yes! Well, not exactly. Sound waves all have frequencies and pretty much anything can and does have a sound wave to it. In turn that can cause something called a resonant frequency, which causes something else to oscillate - that is, causes it to vibrate, hehe - at a relative maximum. If it is low enough, then it can be below the capacity for human hearing! 19 hertz would be enough to cause this. Something at such a small volume would be called Infrasound, and infrasound waves, at the right potency, can cause you feel to uneasy or... even dizzy!

[ so it may not even be the ghost, you see? and furthermore, something madoka cannot control. ]

[science is ... is not her strong suit at all. but Madoka is going to try her hardest to understand.]

So you mean ...sounds you can't even hear can make you feel scared?

That is probably the simplest way to put it, yes! Sound is vibrations and vibrations can cause a lot of effects in your body. For example, at 19 hertz, your eyeballs can start to vibrate and then you will see...

Is this hard to follow?

Um ... No, I think I might understand! You're a good teacher.

A sound making your eyes vibrate doesn't sound very comfortable, though.

Hehe, it sounds pretty silly, doesn't it? But it's true! The human body is very fascinating... But I do not believe you would feel it in this case. In other cases, yes, but this one is so undetectable and miniscule that you wouldn't be at all...

Hmm!! Madoka, is it better for you if I draw it out?

[Jade has said the magic words; Madoka loves to draw, and to see the sort of things other people draw. look at how she lights up at the question.]

... I think it definitely would — I mean! Only if it's not too much trouble.

[ jade produces a pen and some paper, somehow, somewhere, it's there and doodles quickly to illustrate what she means. as she draws, her tongue sticks out. ]

[Madoka leans forward to get a better look, first and foremost, admiring how cute Jade's drawings are — and then, she puzzles over the message for a moment.]

So, it's the wind that's doing it? [wait.]

I mean — even though they're ghosts, and they're really scary ... sometimes things like the wind and the ... sound waves? That can make them seem scarier than they actually are?

[is she on the right track here?]

That is pretty much it, yes. The sound waves cause a kind of... imbalance. You said that vibrating eyeballs sounds uncomfortable right? Well, it is! Your body is telling you something is wrong but can't pinpoint the cause, and so your sense of dread raises.

Oh! I think I see ... so, I have no reason to be afraid of the ghosts, then.

[she's not going to blame the ghosts for things like wind and sound waves; that would be unreasonable. look at that reassured smile on her face, when she reaches forward to take one of Jade's hands, grateful.]

Thank you so much for explaining it to me. Would ... would it be all right if we opened the door? I'd like to apologize to the ghost.

[ jade considers mentioning that this ghost, in particular, seemed to be enjoying antagonizing madoka, but. hm. she's going to trust her, and nod. with her hand on the door, her expression turns serious. ]

Are you absolutely sure? That specter was being... sort of a jerk to you, I'd say.

[ kill 'em with kindness, maybe? ]

I'm sure! He was just playing a prank, right?

[there's kindness and boundless optimism at play here, it sounds like. plus, Madoka likes to think she's used to a bit of joking around, at least, having grown up with Sayaka.]

[ well, it'll be fine. jade's no stranger to intense encounters with the undead, at least.

the door swings open and jade waggles a finger at the spirit, then gestures for it to stay put, before stepping aside for madoka. ]

[okay, you can DO THIS, Madoka. if it weren't for the wind and the sound waves, this guy would just be your run-of-the-mill prankster. right? right.]

[so, after reassuring herself that she has nothing to fear, because there's nothing more at play here than science, she dips forward in an apologetic bow.]

Um ... You've been playing a really good joke on me! I'm really sorry if my reaction was rude at all — you're easily the best at pranking compared to anybody else I've met.

[the ghost has literally been dumbfounded into inaction, because if anybody should be apologizing here, it's him. Madoka ... Madoka wins??]

jade does not know how she was deprived of meeting madoka all this time, but she can only imagine that if she'd had someone around like this during the three years she was stuck on the ship, things would have been a lot more enjoyable. when can they do each other's nails. sleep overs? when can they play light as a feather, stiff as board.

jade immediately clasps madoka's hands in her's. ]

That was great, Madoka!!! You really told him what you felt!
